On Darkness (Psalm 88)

On Darkness (Psalm 88)

Lord, thinking about how many people experience darkness (e.g. as the absence of God)...

The Psalmist looks at darkness, and says you have done it...

  • you have put me in the depths of the pit (vs 6)
  • your wrath lies heavy on me (vs 7)
  • you have overwhelmed me with all your waves
  • you have caused my companions to shun me (vs 8)

But that's not to blame God. That's not what the Psalmist is doing here. Rather, he's talking to God, about what he feels...

If God has done this, then the Psalmist can trust him with it!

How many of us pray like this? Instead, we try to rescue God by saying "bad things happen..." (e.g. this is outside his purview)
