On Seekers

Very easy to romanticize seekers: after all, they're thoughtful, deep. They ask big questions. The Bible's big answers seem to land. It's easy to imagine that they move in the direction of Jesus – they become Christians, and then steady disciples of Jesus – in a way that cultural/casual Christians don't...

But I think the reality is much more nuanced. This journey to faith is often much more one of fits and starts, detours and setbacks. It often has to move through the casual Christian stage (rather than bypass it).

Thinking about some of the converts (and seekers) in Missoula...

  • most of those who seemed like the best seekers – G, L, N – have fizzled out.
  • whereas many of those who seemed fizzly – K, KS – have persevered, or are at least still in the game
