The Law As Tutor (Gal 3)

The Law As Tutor (Gal 3)

It's really interesting... someone could follow Paul's argument [in Galatians 3]:

  • "cursed is everyone who does not do / abide by all the things written in the book of the Law..." (Duet 27:26)
  • "the one who does them, shall live by them..." (Lev 19:5)
  • vs / followed by "the righteous shall live by faith..." (Hab 2:4)

And conclude, "The OT contradicts itself!"

But Paul says, No, there's a way to fit these puzzle pieces together...

  • so the Law becomes provisionary (a tutor, to lead us / oversee us / teach us something)...
  • and faith is present all along, but veiled, because it is waiting for its telos to be revealed (Jesus!)
  • so when Jesus comes and faith find its mark, clearly, plainly... the Law falls away. It has served its purpose. Christ is here!
  • but the Law had to be in place when Christ came, because that's one of the things that reveals him as the ultimate object of our faith – he comes redeeming us from the curse of the Law, by becoming a curse for us (Gal 3:13)
