Why Spiritual Gifts?

Lord, why do you give us all different gifts?
Because you have given us different calls.
Galatians 2:8 – "Just as Peter was entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised [Jews], so I was entrusted with with the gospel to the uncircumcised [Gentiles]..."
"Entrust" – that's calling language. Do you actually believe that God entrusts us with things – that he has built us (and gifted us) for purposes?
1 Corinthians 7:17 – "Let each one lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, to which God has called him..." (talking about contentment with your station).
1 Corinthians 12 – Spiritual gifts...
- Spirit is given to each (not to some)... (vs 7)
- varieties of service... (vs 5), of activities... (vs 6)
- but all given for the common good... (vs 7)
- apportioned by the Spirit, to each one individually, as he wills... (vs 11)
- then he makes the analogy of the Body (one body, many members) – all the members make up the body... there are no members of the body that do not have a function (gifting)
- then he goes into gifting (similar to Eph 4) – God has appointed apostles, prophets, teachers, then miracles, healing, helping, administration, tongues... the Corinthians are prioritizing one kind of gift (tongues) at the expense of the others
- what gifts do: build up! (1 Cor 14)
Romans 12:3-8 – one body, many members... different gifts. "Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us..." (vs 6)
Scripture never says gifts given to "some"...
Always uses the word "each"...
