Discipleship - Simple & Complex

How do we help people learn to walk with God?
In some ways, 1st c. Christianity is so simple: read, pray, listen, hear, respond... worship, give, sacrifice, obey... Just follow the biblical Jesus.
In other ways, it is very complex: after all, you can do all those simple things without any real relationship (e.g. just going through the motions).
- We need to start to see God as real...
(not just a practical means to help us live better) - We need to start seeing our sin is real too...
(and left unchecked, it will eventually destroy me / others) - We need to start seeing Jesus as real...
(not just as a Teacher, but as a Ruler, alive and on-the-move in this world, a Savior who died for my sins so that I can start moving through life differently) - We need to start seeing his purpose for our lives...
(Not just to live for myself, my family – God has put me here for a reason, for others, and he has put others here for me. This purpose that he has for my life is going to inextricably connect with both church and with my work/vocation) - The most important thing... we need changed hearts, which start seeing what God is doing (here and now) and responding in faith!
Addendum:
- You won't learn the complex without practicing the simple...
- You will never understand the impact of 1st c. Christianity without starting to grasp the elements that are more complex...
- You will have little success in teaching others how to do these things without first absorbing them yourself...
- Everything runs through the biblical Jesus.
